INSTRUCTION TO AUTHORS

The Nigerian Journal of Medical Rehabilitation (ISSN: 1118 – 3489) publishes original researchers articles, case report, review articles and short communications of outstanding research findings.

MANUSCRIPT PREPARATION: Manuscripts (the original and 2 photocopies) should be typewritten on A4 paper with double line spacing. Manuscript MUST also be accompanied with electronic version in Word Processing format. Each of the followings should begin on a new page: Titled page, Summary/Abstract, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussions and Acknowledgement(s), References, Tables legend to figures and illustrations.

TITLE PAGE: The title page should give the following information: (1) Title of the article (2) Names and initials of each author; (3) The department and institution where the work was done. (4) Name and address of corresponding author including e-mail and telephone.

SUMMARY/ABSTRACT : This should contain 150-200 words and should be self explanatory. The summary should be structured and organized as follows:

Background: What is the major problem that prompts the study?

Objective: What is the purpose of the study?

Methods: How was the study done?

Results: What are the most important findings?

Conclusion: What is the single most important conclusion?

Also, three – five Key words for purpose of indexing.

TEXT: Should consist of introduction including a brief review of literature, details of research design of material and methods, ethics, statistics, results and discussion.


LETTER TO THE EDITOR: These are editorially dealt with and not subject to peer review. Letters should contain a maximum of 1000 words, a maximum of three illustrations/tables and limited references. Contents of letters may be comments on materials published in the Journal or Clinical observations or other matters of relevance to medicine and allied professions.

ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS: All manuscripts reporting experiments on human subjects should be accompanied by a statement that the author(s) have compiled with the requirement of the Ethical Committee of the Institution in which the work was done. Avoid using patient’s names, initials, or hospital numbers. If full-face photographs must be used, such photographs must be accompanied by a signed or thumb printed informed consent of the subject. Animal experimentation must also follow institution’s guidelines and/or National Laws in the use of Laboratory animals in research.

REFERENCES: The accuracy and the completeness of references are of the utmost importance. The references should be presented using the Harvard System, i.e. authors’ names followed by the date in the text e.g. Nwuga (1995), and listed alphabetically at the end of the article. Please follow these formats:



  • When referring to more that one paper, arrange the paper in order of date if publication e.g. Nwuga (1990), Owoeye (1992) and Olaogun and Sanya (1995) refer to similar findings.



  • When there are 2 authors of a paper, mention both e.g. Amosun and Enwemeka (2003), but when there are 3 or more, mention only the principal author and follow with et al e.g. Balogun et al, (1998).



  • Reference list should appear at the end of the paper alphabetically. The names of all authors must be written out completely not et al e.g. Odia G.I, Mogbo P, Akinpelu A. (2002) Abdominal Muscle Strength and some Respiratory Function Indices in Subjects of varying parity Status. Journal Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy. 14(2): 35-39.



  • BOOKS: The formats illustrated in this example should be followed. Nwuga VCB 1976 Manipulation of the Spine. Baltimore Williams and Wilkins, 82-95.



  • MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION: Includes a covering letter showing that the final manuscript has been seen and approved by all authors. Submit 3 copies of the manuscripts to:
